Lillian Achola was among the top performers for the Uganda handball women’s national team during the hard-fought 32-all stalemate with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Saturday evening at the 13th African Games in Ghana.

Democratic Republic of Congo missed a last-minute gasp penalty, thanks to that million-dollar save by Uganda’s goalkeeper Brenda Adokorach.

Uganda picked its first point in the championship having lost 38-27 to favourites Cameroon in the opener on Thursday.

With the last game in the group coming against Mali, Achola asserts it will be equated to a cup finale.

“First of all, I want to commend all my players for the brave fight against DR Congo. We could have won or lost the game. The point is good enough. We now set our eyes on the match with Mali which is like a cup final. We need to score and defend solidly,” Achola told Kawowo Sports at the Bortyman sports complex moments after the game.

Uganda Rugby national team players (men and women) joined the NCS officials led by assistant general secretary David Ssemakula Katende to cheer up the women’s handball team against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Shinny part first, she top scored in the physical contest with eight goals before getting a red card in the final stages of the tense game.

Achola, a crowd darling scored six goals to her name, a figure similar to that of Diana Nakamya.

Left hander Jesca Nakamaanya and Barbra Nantume had three goals apiece.

Diana Tiperu, a star performer from the Cameroon duel was limited to only two goals, just like Shakira Bako Agarile and Prisicillah Aber.

DR Congo’s Melissa Agathe and Consolate Feza Mwange top scored with 7 and 6 goals respectively.

On Monday, 18th March 2024, Uganda will battle Mali (who have lost two games so far) as DR Congo will take on already qualified Cameroon.
