Uganda’s National Scrabble Team won gold and an individual silver at the 13th African Games among the demonstration sports in Ghana.
Team captain Richard Geria, Ivan Ssentongo and Dr Edgar Odongkara all combined forces to win the gold medal during the games held at Alisa Hotel in North Ridge, Accra.
Uganda’s delegation was led by Nelson Kyagera, President of the Scrabble Association of Uganda (SAU).

The competition had teams from Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Kenya and Liberia.
It is an honour to represent the country at such games as the African Games. I am glad for all my team members for the collective teamwork of performing well and taking home gold. Scrabble in Uganda will swell to greater heights.

In the individual category, Sierra Leone emerged top to take gold as King Emmanuel had a score spread of +519 with an 8-2 win rate.
Uganda’s Geria took silver with +433 (8-2 win rate) and Kenyan, Stanley Njoroge earned bronze with +436 spread with a 7-3 win rate.
Another Ugandan, Dr Odongkara narrowly missed the medal bracket, finishing fourth with +254 (7-3 win rate).
Besides Scrabble, the other demonstration games at the 13th African Games in Ghana include; Pickleball, Mixed Martial Arts, Arm Wrestling and Sambo, E-sports.
These are games that the organizers intend to officially accommodate at the 2027 showing in Egypt.
