Ahmed Kouka scored an early goal for Al Ahly as they saw off dominant but lethargic Simba 1-0 at the full to capacity Benjamin Mkapa stadium, Dar es Salaam.
The goal arrived in the fourth minute in what was the Red Devils only shot on target.
Simba were the better side and fathomed the better scoring opportunities but were not lethal.
Said Ntibazonkiza, Denis Kibu, Essomba Onana and the enterprising Clatous Chama Junior all had chances but failed to beat the visitors’ goalkeeper.
The Msimbazi registered seven shots on target including a last gasp attempt by former Al Ahly forward Luis Miquissone.
The two sides face off in the return leg next week at the Cairo International stadium.
