Uganda’s medal hopes at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games will be at an all-time high tonight during the last event of the second day of athletics.
The Men’s 10000m final will mark the climax of Day Two of athletics as two-time world champion Joshua Cheptegei vies for his first Olympic title over the distance.
The world-record holder has made it clear throughout the season that his prime target is winning the race.
“I wasn’t tactically at my best in my first race, but I will be at my best for Paris. My target is the 10k as I don’t have an Olympic 10k title,” Cheptegei said back in May ahead of the Oslo Diamond League meet.
Cheptegei, a silver medalist in Tokyo 2020, will be looking to dethrone defending champion Selemon Barega, one of three strong Ethiopians in the line-up, which also has Yomif Kejelcha and Berihu Aregawi.
Alongside Cheptegei will be Jacob Kiplimo who is also one to watch. The bronze medalist at the last Olympics will also be going for glory while Martin Magengo Kiprotich, Uganda’s third member in the event, is expected to set the pace.
Also taking the purple track and expected to be competitive are Kenyans Daniel Mateiko, Nicholas Kipkorir, and Bernard Kibet as well as Canada’s Mohammad Ahmed and Grant Fischer of the United States.
