Uganda Women have bagged their first trophy in the 2024-25 international 7s season. They clinched the 2024 Willem Strauss Invitational 7s tournament on Sunday evening.

Despite having been invited on short notice last week, the Lady Rugby Cranes 7s beat home side South Africa in the Cup Final by 12-10 points.

Summary of Uganda Women’s Results:

Five teams; Zimbabwe, Quins Pink, UP Tuks, Uganda, and hosts South Africa took part in this tournament. There was a round-robin phase to determine the seeding.

Round-robin:

  • Uganda 50-10 Zimbabwe
  • Uganda 17-19 South Africa
  • Uganda 50-00 Quins Pink
  • Uganda 47-00 UP Tuks

Uganda finished as the second seed and qualified for the Cup Final where they faced Blitzboks Women.

  • Cup Final: Uganda 12-10 South Africa

Lydia Namabiro and Unity Namulala scored the two tries and Tina Akello kicked one conversion.

All players have been in non-residential training with the national team alongside featuring for their local clubs in the ongoing Nile Special 7s Series.

The 2024-25 calendar officially opens with the Safari 7s from October 11-12 in Nairobi, Kenya. Uganda are the defending champions of this tournament.

The two-legged Rugby Africa Women’s 7s tournament will follow on November 9-10 in Accra, Ghana. Uganda won bronze at the last edition.

The above-mentioned tournaments will be used as a build-up to the 2025 World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger Series.
