The inaugural edition of the Gulu city Mental health sports gala will take place on Sunday, 8th December 2024 at Pece War Memorial Stadium, Gulu.

This event is organized by Gracy Minds Empowerment Initiative Uganda, a follow up from the Kampala edition which took place at Legends Rugby grounds, Naguru in August 2024.

There is an assortment of sports activities that will take center stage to include football, netball, tag-of-war as the out-door disciplines with several mind games like chess, scrabble, checkers and puzzle competitions.

According to Mercy Gracy Omona, the director of Gracy Minds Empowerment Initiative Uganda, the edition will be used as a platform to extend a number of services to the people as Mental Health screening & counseling, medical consultation, eye & dental check-ups, hepatitis vaccination, blood donation and sickle cell screening.

Sports provide a powerful platform to connect people, reduce stress, and build emotional strength.

The championship will be dwelt along the theme; Championing youth resilience”.

Teams registration:

Each of the teams willing to register will pay Ug.Shs 300,000.

The format of play will be 8 players per side with every team in the competition expected to have 14 players.

Prizes:

The winning team shall take home Ug.Shs 1,000,000, a trophy and gold medals.

The first runners up will go with silver medals and Ug.Shs 500,000.

A number of mental health experts and politicians have rallied the populous to throng Pece Stadium on the aforementioned day for this event.

Dr Hafsa Lukwata, the commissioner for mental health division ministry of health has openly aired her full support for the event.

Hon. Ambrose Onoria, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Gulu city is another high profile leader.

Goldy Oboma, the Group CEO at GOLDYS Group Holdings Limited and also working at the Federation of Uganda Employers has also added her loud voice to the cause.

Others include Dr George “Quex” Kwesiga, among others.
