Black Pirates registered their third win in as many games of the 2025 National Rugby Premiership after beating experienced newcomers Victoria University Sharks, 28-13.
The opening forty minutes of the Saturday afternoon clash at King’s Park in Bweyogerere were a cavalcade of errors from hosts and quick hands from the visitors, especially at the defensive breakdowns.
The Sharks started on the front foot pinning Pirates in their half early. It was no surprise that Victoria University got to the scoreboard first through a penalty from Isreal Makokha.
In response, the Pirates pinned Sharks in their territory but the visitors held their ground for a while forcing a couple of turnovers from Alema Ruhweza and Humphrey Tashobya. However, after sustained attack from the Sea Robers, the Sharks conceded as second rower Eliphaz Emong powered over near the posts with William Nkore converting before adding a penalty for a 10-03 lead.
Makokha missed a penalty from a long way out as the Sharks tried to get a quick response. The defining play of the half would shortly follow as Tashobya stopped Elvin Odiambo from grounding after a lineout-plus-maul.
Nkore opened the second half with a couple of penalties between which Makokha and Emmanuel Ochan couldn’t find their bearing for the Sharks who had Saul Kivumbi in the sinners.
Back to full complement Sharks went hunting and the pressure saw Pirates reduced to 14 men with Isaac Massa sent to the bin. Kevins Makmot’s charges had two scoring opportunities during that period; Tashobya held the ball up again while Allan Kyagulanyi’s try was chalked off as Paul Epilo had made a forward pass to the winger.
Kivumbi would however power his way over the white chalk after several phases in which veteran scrumhalf Davis Kyewalabye played a quick ball. Daniel Katerega missed the conversion.

Shortly after restart, the Pirates extended their lead through Allan Karuhanga. Sharks were penalised for holding on, Conrad Wanyama scratched and ran a few meters before finding the winger who sliced through Sharks’ defence to dot down. Nkore skewed the conversion wide.
With the momentum in their favour, the Pirates started to play their expansive rugby and were soon rewarded. Even after Nathan Bwambale lost the ball forward at the posts, the Sea Robbers remained relentless.
The Pirates quickly recycled the ball from one side to another through Karuhanga, Muhammad Haruna, Alex Aturinda, Umar Duff and Nkore finding Roy Kizito on the opposite wing to dive over. Nkore converted from a difficult angle for a 28-08 lead with under six minutes to play.
Victoria University forwards’ coach Cyrus Wathum kept pushing his side and they would go on to score through eighthman Mark Omoding after sucking Pirates’ defense inside before going out to the wing.
