Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team has secured a spot in the final of the ongoing FIBA Zone V Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt.

The Gazelles played to a dominant 66-30 victory against Burundi in a game played at Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall on Thursday afternoon.

Uganda had a slow start, trailing by three points (17-14) at the end of the first quarter. However, they bounced back in the second quarter with an improved setup, taking an eight-point lead to the halftime break.

Centre Melisa Akullu played a key role, scoring eight points in the second quarter.

After the break, Uganda took full control of the game, extending their lead to 20 points by the end of the third quarter.

Jane Nansikombi shone in this frame, contributing 10 points, nine coming from beyond the arc.

In the final quarter, rookies Bushira Namayanja and Modesta Anyanga were given playing time and both got on the scoresheet.

Nansikombi (14 points), Akullu (12 points), and Paige Robinson (10 points) led Uganda’s scoring in double digits.

Only Ines Nezerwa scored in double digits for Burundi, finishing with 10 points.

Uganda will return to action on Saturday for a high-stakes final against hosts Egypt. The winner of this much-anticipated clash will secure the sole qualification spot for the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 tournament.
