Uganda Women twice squandered opportunities to win matches in the knockout phase of the 2025 World Rugby 7s Challenger Series opening round in Cape Town.

This was during the 5th-place playoff semifinal and the 7th-place playoff final against Thailand and Czechia, which they lost by two points.

Uganda’s Day Two Results:

  • 5th-place Playoff Semifinal: Thailand 19-17 Uganda
  • 7th-place Playoff Final: Uganda 19-21 Czechia

Against Thailand, Uganda had led by 12-nil at halftime but got their foot off the gas in the second half. But against Czechia, they played with the handbrake up and trailed by 14-nil at halftime, ultimately running out of time in the second half.

The disappointing performances mean Uganda finished eighth out of the twelve participating teams. Kenya were the champions, beating Argentina in the Cup Final and South Africa finished third.

Team Uganda will need to pull up their socks in the second round at the same venue if they are to progress further in the 2025 World Rugby 7s Challenger Series.
