Orlando Pirates trimmed Mamelodi Sundowns’ lead at the top of the Premier Soccer League to 12 points after defeating Polokwane City 1-0 last weekend.
The Sea Robbers went into the fixture aware that victory at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium would be vital in their campaign to win the top-tier race.
Buccaneers cut Mamelodi Sundowns’ lead at the top to 12 points and the Soweto giants still have three games in hand.
Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Yasser Mugerwa who also played at Orlando Pirates between 2015 and 2016 weighed in on the club’s chances of dethroning Sundowns.
“They have a chance of winning [the title] but it will depend on Sundowns’ performance. They have 3 games in hand but still behind by 12 points, so it’s kind of difficult for them to win the league,” Mugerwa said.
Orlando Pirates have been in fine form on the continent too, reaching the semifinals of the CAF Champions League where they will face Egyptian side Pyramids.
“They have Pyramids in the semifinals. Starting away is an advantage for us, though a tight one as well.”
Mugerwa, who played locally for URA Football Club, KCCA FC and Express FC, also reflected on his time at Pirates.
“For me, playing at the Pirates was something great. Playing for one of the biggest clubs on the continent with an organized staff and talented lads was so cool, I learnt a lot and developed into a professional player.”
