Quarterfinal 3

  • Vipers 1-0 Sports Club Villa

Vipers Sports Club progressed to the semifinals of the 2024-2025 Stanbic Uganda Cup at the expense of rivals Sports Club Villa.

The Venoms beat the Jogoos 1-0 courtesy of team skipper Milton Karisa at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Easter Monday under floodlights.

Karisa, who was introduced at the start of the second half, headed home with two minutes to play after goalkeeper Jean Braddy Wokorach had fluffed a hard shot by Abdul-Karim Watambala.

Before Karisa’s goal, the game was even and it looked destined for the post-match penalties until the team captain reacted swiftly to nod home the winner.

By then, there was limited time left on the clock for the Jogoos to make any impact.

he visitors had commenced the contest on a promising note when forward Charles Lwanga had a simple header well collected by Vipers’ goalkeeper Dennis Kiggundu in the third minute.

Two minutes later, Vipers’ January signing Isaac Ogwang had a shot from right flank blocked by defender Arnold Odong.

The Venoms earned the first corner kick of the game in the 6th minute.

Moses Waiswa delivered a quick short corner-kick one to Allan Okello who passed to Richard Matovu.

Matovu then crossed into the area but defender Livingstone Mulondo brushed wide.

By the 12th minute, Vipers had stamped their authority onto the game with three corner kicks well defended.

On the quarter hour mark, Vipers defender Hilary Panuel Mukundane slid to thwart Patrick Jonah Kakande inside the Vipers’ goal area with a timely tackle.

The Jogoos’ right back Frank Mulimi overlapped and shot off target off 35 yards in the 16th minute.

On 22 minutes, Veteran right back Nico Wakiro Wadada overlapped before he passed to Moses Waiswa who executed a first time cross for Ogwang.

Ogwang was denied with a poor first touch as goalkeeper Jeans Braddy Wokorach collected easily.

It was Vipers again in the 25th minute when defender Livingstone Mulondo failed to make contact with Okello’s inviting free-kick at the back post.

SC Villa forward Francis Onekalit became the first player to be cautioned in this match in the 32nd minute.

Two minutes later, it was Kakande’s moment to glitter.

The diminutive skilled forward broke twice in the path of Wadada before aiming for goal but goalkeeper Kiggundu was well stationed, much to the delight of the fans in the gallery.

Lwanga out-jumped goalkeeper Kiggundu but the effort flew over in the 38th minute.

As the first half neared its climax, Kakande shot from distance with the goalie Kiggundu executing a dive to make a save, the major incident of the opening stanza which remained goal-less.

Prior to kick off for the second half, Vipers introduced Milton Karisa for Isaac Ogwang with the former taking over the captain’s arm band from Okello.

On the other hand, SC Villa called for a double change with Sula “Malouda” Matovu and Elvis Ngonde replacing Onekalit and Diego Missi Ssemugera respectively.

The home side kicked off the second half brilliantly. Yunus Sentamu hit the post in one attack and Wadada’s long ball from distance also settled on the cross bar moments after the hour mark.

SC Villa substitute player Tonny Atukunda forced a save from goalkeeper Kiggundu in the 67th minute before Waiswa chipped over a free-kick on the edge of the goal area from an acute angle.

With 8 minutes to play, the Jogoos rested Lwanga for Reagan Mpande before Vipers pulled out Waiswa for holding midfielder Paul Patrick Mbowa.

The defining moment of the game arrived in the 88th minute with Vipers’ goal.

Watambala hit hard the ball with his magical left foot. It was parried by SC Villa goalkeeper Wokorach and Karisa was on the spot to nod home the rebound well celebrated.

It was done and dusted as the deadlock had been broken.

As the final whistle from referee Lucky Razake Kasalirwe was blown, the Vipers fans celebrated wildly and the Jogoos players dejected.

Many of the SC Villa players were crest-fallen. It took the assistance of Vipers’ goalkeeping coach Ali Kimera and other SC Villa players to comfort Wokorach.
