Gulu City will host the 2025 Girls Schools Cricket Week for the first time, spreading the game to different parts of the country.
The girls’ finals move to Gulu City after being hosted by Soroti for the last two years. Gulu City has prepared five grounds to host the finals, which include two playing surfaces at St Joseph’s College Layibi, Gulu High School, Gulu Public Primary School, and Gulu Prisons Primary School.
The tournament will feature sixteen schools from six different regions of Uganda. Light SS from Soroti is the defending champion, and they will represent the Eastern Region with Olila High School.
Ndejje SS, Gayaza High School, St Henry’s Mukono, St John’s Mukono are the schools from the Central region. Nyakasura School and Mt Rwenzori SS will represent the west, while Masaka SS is the South West representative. Record winners Jinja SS, Good Heart SS, St James, and Iganga SS will represent the Eastern region. Sacred Heart and Masindi SS are the Northern representatives, while Gulu High will feature as the host school.
Jinja SS has won the title eight times and will be chasing a record ninth, while four-time winners Gayaza High School and three-time champions Olila High School are all among the favourites.
Defending Champions Light SS will be looking for back-to-back titles, but in unfamiliar territory, they are vulnerable. Sacred Heart made an impressive debut last year, and they will be one of the teams to watch out for.
Irene Mutoni and Gringlish Nabulime, who were part of the U-19 girls team last year, will lead the charge of St John’s Mukono, while their compatriot Ruth Muwanga will be the star player for Iganga SS. St Henry’s Mukono SS will make its debut at the annual event.
The tournament is used to select the best junior players to represent Uganda at future junior events.
