UCU Canons secured a convincing 79-62 victory against the City Oilers in the National Basketball League at YMCA Court on Friday.

This defeat marked the City Oilers’ sixth loss in their 11 first-round games of the ongoing 2025 NBL campaign.

Joel Kayira played a crucial role in orchestrating both the offence and defence for the Mukono-based team, helping them achieve this well-deserved win.

Kayira recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Flore Dushime and Pech Alier also contributed significantly, adding 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Only Ben Komakech (17 points) and Edgar Munaba (13 points) managed to score in double digits for City Oilers.

Canons pulled away in the early phases of the opening quarter but Benjamin Kawumi’s long-range shot tied the game 16-16, setting the stage for an exciting game.

As the second quarter closed, Komakech hit a three-pointer, leaving the City Oilers trailing by five points (34-29) at halftime.

Despite facing foul trouble midway through the third quarter, the Canons maintained a six-point (52-46) lead by the end of that period.

The Canons came out strong in the final quarter as the Oilers went cold on the defensive end, ultimately securing a commanding 17-point victory.
