Masaza Cup: Giants Buddu, Gomba lock-horns in 2025 season opener

Buganda Masaza Cup 2025:

• Official opening match: Buddu Vs Gomba
• Date: Saturday, 21st June
• Venue: Kitovu Sports Arena, Masaka

Buddu and Gomba will face off in the official opening match of the 2025 Buganda Masaza Football Championship on Saturday, June 21, at the Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka City.

This was confirmed after the draws for this year’s championship were held at the Public Health Auditorium in Makerere University on Thursday, 29th June 2025.

Both Buddu (winners in 2016, 2021, and 2024) and Gomba (winners in 2004, 2009, 2014, 2017, and 2020) are in the Bulange Group, alongside two other former winners: Buluuli (2011) and Busiro (2022), as well as Busujju and the islanders of Ssese.

Only Busujju and Ssese have never won the event in this particular group.

Other Groups

Muganzirwazza Group has two-time winners Ssingo, 2006 champions Kkooki, Kabula, Butambala and Mawogola.

In Masengere Group is three-time champion Mawokota, Buweekula, Bugerere, Buvuma and Bulemeezi.

In this group, only Kyaddondo, Mawokota and Bulemeezi have won the competition before, while Buweekula, Buvuma and Bugerere have never won the event.

Before the draw, there was the first-ever Masaza Cup leaders’ symposium meant to generate ideas on how best to run this tournament.

Topics of discussion ranged from health, security and safety in events; public relations and strategic partnerships, technical bench (officiation protocols and coordination), legal and disciplinary.

Hajji Jamil Ssewanyana and Owek. Hassan Kiyemba were the moderators.

Dr Joseph Kalanzi, Henry Kitambula, Abdu Lukooya Ssekabira, Ahmed Hussein, Robert Ssentongo, David Isabirye, Ali Tomusange, Festus Kirumira and Derrick Kavuma.

Samuel Mpiima and Mansour Kabugo were in charge of the 2025 program and administrative guide, alongside the draw.
