Uganda’s wildwater canoeing scene is ablaze with excitement following the exceptional performances of two rising stars, Wilbert Atuhaire, 23, and Sharifu Lukwago, 22.
This was during the recent Wildwater Canoeing time trials at Itanda Falls in Jinja city. The duo clocked remarkable average sprint times — 0:47:91 for Atuhaire and 0:49:58 for Lukwago — over four fiercely competitive trials, cementing their reputation as top-tier canoeists and earning them international recognition.
Their outstanding efforts have not gone unnoticed. Both athletes have received invitations to compete in the 2025 Junior and U-23 Wildwater Canoeing World Championships, scheduled to take place this summer in Solkan, Slovenia.
They will take part in the Individual Sprint events, representing Uganda on the world stage. The journey to Solkan is made possible thanks to generous international support. Kajak Klub Soške Elektrarne (KKSE), a prestigious Slovenian canoe club, has stepped in as a key sponsor. KKSE will provide full board accommodation, boats, and local transport for the athletes throughout their stay in Slovenia.
Meanwhile, Mucho International, the official partner of Rafting and Canoeing Uganda, will sponsor international flight tickets for the pair. The Ugandan Canoeing Federation also praised the athletes, describing them as “the future of Wildwater sports in East Africa” and expressing optimism for their performance in Solkan.
With the backing of international sponsors and the momentum of their impressive local performances, Atuhaire and Lukwago are poised to be strong contenders at the upcoming championship — and flag bearers for Uganda in the growing global arena of Wildwater canoeing.
As the countdown to Solkan begins, all eyes will be on this promising duo to make waves for Uganda on both the continental and world stages.
