The Victoria Pearls remain unbeaten after five games at the 11th edition of the Kwibuka Women’s T20i tournament in Kigali.

The defending champions were able to overcome South American side Brazil and Malawi, with the Southern Africans testing their mettle.

Immaculate Nakisuyi played an aggressive knock of 37 off 27 balls in the run chase to set up a seven-wicket win against Brazil.

Uganda won the toss and sent Brazil in to bat in overcast conditions that were very well exploited by the defending champions. Captain Janet Mbabazi picked up 4/16 with the fielding being the most impressive after effecting four run outs. Mbabazi joined the exclusive 100 T20i wickets club that includes former Victoria Pearls Captain Consy Aweko.

Brazil didn’t have the bowling to trouble Uganda, despite losing three wickets. On the day, Immaculate Nakisuyi took responsibility and ensured victory for the defending champions.

In Game 5, Malawi won the toss and sent Uganda in to bat, and they immediately had Uganda on the ropes with two careless run outs, leaving Uganda 5/2 inside the power play.

Kevin Awino (31) anchored the innings, and her partnership with Rita Musamali (28) repaired the early damage. Proscovia Alako (20) plundered 16 runs off the final over to take the score over the 100-run mark.

In response, despite some resistance from Lydia Dimba (29), no one else was able to get into double digits as a career best bowling performance from Stephanie Nampiina (6/8) wrapped up the game for Uganda.

Malawi was very courageous to test Uganda, but the defending champions were good enough, even if they didn’t play to their best.

Uganda will still have to play against hosts Rwanda, Tanzania, and Nigeria to finish off the round robin games before the semifinals.

The action takes a break on Monday and will return on Tuesday for Game Day 7.
