The fifth edition of the Basamulekkere – Ssekigozi boda boda sports tourney came to a successful conclusion on Sunday, 29th June 2025 at the Nkumba Kataka playground in Katabi Town Council.

A record mammoth crowd graced the climax of the football championship final in a tournament co-sponsored by the incumbent mayor of Katabi Town Council His Worship Ronald Kalema Bassamukkere and politican Stephen Ssekigozi.

The climax had a third place play-off, football finale, Ludo championship and cycling event.

Transformer Nkumba Bufulu boda boda stage beat Bugiri Bukasa boda boda stage to win the trophy that was accompanied by gold medals and a brand new boda boda bike registration number UMA 368CW.

The losing finalist (Bugiri Bukasa) also got a brand new boda boda registration number UMA 574CX, silver medals, a ball and a set of jerseys.

Normal time of the end-to-end final ended goal-less before a lengthy and dramatic shoot out, with Transformer Nkumba Bufulu boda boda stage triumphed 13-12.

“The essence of such a tournament is to provide entertainment and unite our boda boda people through sports” Mayor Kalema attested.

His counterpart Ssekigozi was overwhelmed by the response of the teams, and vowed to continue supporting such a noble cause.

“The numbers have been promising and I am far impressed” Ssekigozi who is vying the Busiro South Member of Parliament seat remarked.

“We shall continue to associate with the boda boda through such causes and other people as well” he added.

National Unity Platform political party was well represented by the top brass officials as Waiswa Mufumbiro (deputy spokesperson), Ali “Nubian Lee” Buken (minister of arts, youth and sports), Banjoman, Najja Nasifu, Albert Mugambwa, Stuart Lubwama, Lillian Babirye, Richard Ssekyondo and other area politicians.

The outstanding teams and players were rewarded with medals, certificates, trophies, balls, sets of jerseys.

Kitala stage, the third team in football got a cow, a ball, bronze medals and a set of jerseys.

Other winners:

Kabale stage won in Ludo as Kabale stage came top in cycling.

A total of twenty boda boda stages within Katabi Town Council took part.

These entailed the champions Transformer Nkumba Bufulu, Bugiri Bukasa, Hope, Ssemuwemba, Kitubulu, Stabex, Jantos, Bubuuli, Unique, Kitala Prisons, Bwerenga, Kaaboona, Katomi, Mubenjja, Keep Left, Taggy, Joyna, Casablanca and Kawuuku.

Each of the participating teams got a certificate of participation, a set of jerseys and a ball.

There was entertainment from two brass bands present.

This tournament has been played since 2018 with the exception of the two COVID-19 hit years (2020 and 2021).
