The TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 is now 25 days away from kick off.
In our third of the CHAN 2024 series, Ismael Kiyonga reveals the things you need to know about the tournament.
What is CHAN?
CHAN, which stands for the Africa Nations Championship is a tournament meant for players who ply their trade in their respective national domestic leagues.
What edition is CHAN 2024?
The CHAN 2024 will be the 8th edition in the history of the tournament which was inaugurated in 2009 with Ivory Coast hosting the first edition.
Who will host CHAN 2024?
For the first time ever, three nations will host the tournament; Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
The decision to award the tournament to the East African countries was made formal on December 17, 2023 and CAF will use it as a precursor for the Afcon 2027 that will be hosted by the same nations.
Key Dates and venues in the CHAN 2024
The tournament will kick off on August 02 at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium, Dar es Salaam when Tanzania battle Burkina Faso and conclude on August 30 at Moi International stadium, Kasarani, Nairobi.
Uganda’s Mandela National stadium, Namboole will host the 3rd place play off a day before the final.
Which teams will feature at CHAN 2024?
For the first time, 19 nations will compete for the trophy; divided in four groups.
Groups A, B and C have five teams each while group D has only four but only the top two teams from each group qualify for the quarter finals.
Defending champions Senegal and record winners DR Congo and Morocco will all take part as well as debutants Kenya and Central African Republic.
