Bevis Mugabi Credit: Carlisle FC

Uganda Cranes defender Bevis Mugabi has joined English side Carlisle from Cyprus’ Anorthosis.

The move has left lots of questions from the football fraternity as he drops from the Cyprus first division to the 5th tier of league football as Carlisle plays in the National League.

“Carlisle United Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Bevis Mugabi on a two-year deal,” read a statement on the club website.

“Mugabi, 30, arrives after a stint in Cyprus with Anorthosis, where he played 17 times and scored two goals.”

Mugabi who plays as centre back but also as right back on the national team has over 20 caps for the Cranes with one goal.

Born in England, Mugabi spent his youth career with Fulham and Southampton, before moving to Yeovil Town in the summer of 2016 where he played over 102 times scoring 5 goals.

He then joined Scottish Premier League side Motherwell in 2019 where he spent five years and made 125 appearances scoring seven goals in his time in Scotland. 

Head of Recruitment, Martin Foyle said: “Bevis is an experienced defender and he is an excellent addition to the squad.

“He brings a wealth of experience from Scotland, abroad and international football, and he has a fantastic attitude which will help to drive the standards even higher on and off the pitch.”

Mugabi is a key cog of the Uganda Cranes and represented the nation at the 2019 Afcon finals in Egypt where he played as a right back.
