FIBA Women’s AfroBasket freshers, South Sudan, have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2025 edition after beating Egypt, 75-65.
South Sudan had to overcome a 16-point first-quarter deficit to pick up their first victory at the tournament, which sets them up for an all-Zone V date with Uganda on Thursday afternoon.
South Sudan were favoured by bookies to claim the qualifier for the quarterfinals contest against Egypt and competed as such, particularly in the second half of the game.
However, it was Egypt that controlled the first quarter, running to a 16-point (26-10) lead in the opening ten minutes.
South Sudan slowly but surely started to chip away in the second period, which they claimed by a couple of points (20-18).
Alberto Antuna’s charge returned from the locker room like bulldogs protecting a toddler playing a swarming defence that limited Raneem Elgadawy to 5 points in the half. Offensively, the AfroBasket debutants ran a very good transition and used their size to get whatever they wanted in the paint.

Point guard Delicia Washington ran the transition littered with a few coast-to-coast buckets while Rose Akon Macuei, Teresa Gakdeng, Nyamer Lual and Adut Bulgak were a menace in the paint, buldozing their way to the basket.
Washington stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks. Gakdeng finished with a team-high 19 points to go with a game-high 24 rebounds and a couple of blocks, while Macuei contributed 17 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.
Elgadawy scored a game-high 25 points in a losing effort. Farida Abdelnabi (13) and Meral Abdelgawad (10) scored in double digits for Egypt.
