Uganda’s Gazelles will play for seventh place at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket after falling to Mozambique, 76-58, on Friday afternoon.

The Gazelles were crestfallen following the quarterfinal defeat to South Sudan, and the start to the contest against Mozambique showed the players had not recovered with some not they were scoring at tip-off.

It was no surprise that they fell behind 21-14 in the opening ten minutes, a lead for Mozambique that ballooned to as big as 17 points.

After the break, the Gazelles, inspired by Hope Akello, fought back and came to within 2 points (51-49) with just under 3 minutes to play. However, Mozambique went on a 10-0 run to close out the quarter and restore a double-digit lead from which the Gazelles never recovered.

Akello scored an efficient game-high 18 points, and Peruth Nyamwenge, the other Gazelle to score in double digits, had 10 points and 5 assists.

Stefania Chiziane netted 16 points to lead Mozambique. Leia Dongue (14), Chanaya Pinto (14) and Ingvild Mucauro (12) scored in double figures.

Uganda will thus battle hosts Côte d’Ivoire, who lost to Cameroon, for 7th place on Saturday, while Mozambique will play Cameroon for 5th Place.
