Uganda Cranes coach Morley Byekwaso believes his side’s bluntness in front of goal cost the team a semi-final spot at the expense defending champions Senegal.

The hosts, playing in the quarter finals for the first time in seven attempts were eliminated by a determined Senegal side that got the desired goal in the 62nd minute through Oumar Ba.

“We lost this game today. Thank God we gave our best. In such a difficult match, we missed some opportunities, and that cost us dearly. The Senegal champion didn’t rely only on talent; they had the experience to handle this game,” he told reporters in a post-match briefing.

“The system is built around the players. We tried to bring in the substitutes to help, but unfortunately, we failed and conceded chances.

“That is why we are out of the tournament,”

Byekwaso and team should however be proud of the achievement as the first coaches to take Uganda beyond the group stages despite featuring in seven successive tournaments since 2011.
