The Christian concept of the Second Return signifies Christ’s return, ushering in complete justice. It promises a restoration of balance and relational mutuality across all aspects of existence.

For Denis Onyango, his return to the national team is a moment to feel proud and perhaps offer more than what meets the eye.

The legendary goalkeeper who had retired in 2021, bounced back to the national team and his return was treated with mixed emotions, some believe he still has what it takes to be Uganda’s number one shot-stopper while a section of the public think his return stiffles chances for the budding goalies.

However, Onyango is delighted for his return and took part in Uganda Cranes first training session ahead of the two upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifer matches against Mozambique and Somalia.

“First of all, I’m happy to be back for round two. It was good news for me because I was in the team camp when thw news for the call up came and I shared the news with the team and they were very happy for me because all of them knew I had retired but some of them wanted to see me back for probably the final time,” he started.

The gangly goalkeeper believes his return goes beyond just being a player but also motivating the younger players.

“For the boys most of them I have played with them and some I haven’t and I’m getting to know them better. But it is very young and energetic group and probably they will fight for me,” he said before adding, “Every team needs both the senior and young players because the young blood gives more energy and the senior players help the team to calm down when there is pressure.”

Asked if his return will block the chnaces of other goalkeepers, Onyango was quick to say, there are no guarantees he will be a starter.

“There are no guarantees in football. Whoever is ready to represent the country and gets the opportunity to play should do well because our target at the end of the day is winning games.”

Uganda hosta Mozambique this Friday and then face Somalia on Monday next week. The Cranes occupy fourth spot in Group G on nine points, six below leaders Algeria.
