Uganda Women’s Team on Saturday clinched the Homeless World Cup title after overcoming Mexico in the final.
The tournament played in Oslo, Norway saw Uganda defy the odds to defeat defending Champions Mexico 6-0 and deny them a chance of winning the title for an eighth straight time.
Stella Namisango was the star in the final, scoring a hat trick before Eva Nagayi, Jemimah Twesigye added the other goals.
Uganda became the first African team to win this tournament. Egypt too triumphed in the men’s final, defeating Portugal 4-3 to also become the first African men’s team to reach the final and ultimately win the title.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino took to his Instagram account to congratulate Uganda upon attaining this feat.

Uganda’s team largely comprised of players who feature in the FUFA Women Super League, most of them attached to Makerere University Women’s Football Team.
The Homeless World Cup (HWC) is an annual association football tournament organized by the Homeless World Cup Foundation, a social organization which advocates the end of homelessness through the sport. The organization puts together an annual football tournament where teams of homeless people from various countries compete.
The tournament was first held in 1999, and in 2008 it added a women’s competition. From 2010 onwards, all tournaments have featured both men’s and women’s teams.
