Sommet Basketball Club drew first blood against the defending champions, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five semifinal playoff series.

Sommet secured a well-deserved 86-74 victory against City Oilers in the National Basketball League semifinal encounter at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Tuesday.

The record champions struggled with the long shot, converting only six of the 33 attempts beyond the paint.

John Focus Teko’s layup concluded the first period with a layup as Sommet opened a three-point (25-22) lead.

It was a see-saw affair as Joseph Chuma’s layup tied the game for City Oilers 44-44 going into the halftime break.

Coming from the locker rooms, the City Oilers were limited to only 13 points as Sommet stretched the lead to nine points at the end of the third quarter.

Sommet held on and secured a 12-point victory in front of a large, loud crowd.

The two sides will lock horns again in game two at the same venue on Friday, September 19, 2025.

Peter Cheng (18 points, 15 rebounds), Fataki Nyembo (18 points) and Mark Ngobi (17 points) led Sommet’s scoring chart in double digits.

Kurt Wegscheider (19 points, 10 rebounds), Chad Bowie (13 points), and Fayed Baale (11 points) scored in double digits for the City Oilers.
