The Uganda Premier League side Vipers has made its position clear by confirming that they will not participate in the upcoming UPL match against Kitara FC.

This decisive statement was released on Thursday, October 2, 2025, via the club’s official website.

“Vipers Sports Club informs its stakeholders, football fans, and the general public that the club will not take part in the new double-header format game against Kitara,” the statement reads in part.

The announcement comes just one day before the fixture is scheduled to take place.

Vipers’ decision highlights a significant conflict between the league’s governing body and one of its most successful clubs. The Kitende-based team has been vocal in its opposition to the changes, and this latest move emphasizes their dissatisfaction with FUFA’s handling of their concerns.

The club emphasized that their withdrawal represents a commitment to the integrity of the game and a demand for a league that listens to and respects all stakeholders.

In conclusion, the statement expresses gratitude to their fans, genuine football lovers, and all stakeholders for their continued support and encouragement in the pursuit of fair play and proper governance.

  1. Vipers is not bigger than the league… They can go and compete in Kenya or Tanzanian if they think their fans will travel to watch them…

  2. Well, Vipers even though with plenty of recent success is not considered a traditional power house. If Express, SC Villa and KCCA were to also boycott the matches then Fufa would Listen immediately.
The real question is, how do you get fans back to watching local football in large numbers like the 70s, 80s, 90s and the first decade of 2000s? They tend to show up for Uganda cranes matches and some international matches involving big African Clubs. It seems the fans are still around, but just want to show up if it’s big stars playing. So the league should focus on improving the product they put out. Just simple economics. How do you improve the product? better Pro League, better pay and many other variables.

  3. Please ,guys this format is working in champions league. Why don’t we embrace it and we the end result of it.

    1. The reason it was brought up in the UCL, it’s because the added teams and the many games to play. The super League only has 16 teams and 30 games to play. Why make all the fuss.

  4. I wonder how they came up with the idea of this format, it’s not worthy of a league. Teams waste money and time playing insignificant games for whose points don’t tally to anywhere in being league champion. There’s a lot of unfairness in terms of home and away games as well as total number of games each plays a season. One team can’t play 32 games another 30 games and 35 games. A team can claim 6 points from those 2 deficient games to over take any teams above them in the league table. I heard FUFA acquired money from CAF, FIFA and other bodies to implement their new format for which they have already pocketed and they fear for accountability issues but at least they would have adopted the format in Scotland or USA. For they are tried and tested. Dominant nations in world football have never implemented our so called format during their initial stages of football development and from no where Uganda is doing so. RIP Ugandan football ⚽⚽⚽⚽
