UCU Canons see off Sommet Spartans Basketball Club to finish third in the 2025 National Basketball League season.
UCU Canons secured a well-deserved 70-60 victory against Sommet BC in the third-place playoff encounter at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Tuesday.
Sommet will shake off the loss and look at the massive work put into finishing fourth in their maiden season in the top tier.
It was an end-to-end encounter right from the word go as Sommet opened a two-point lead at the end of the opening encounter.
In the second quarter, Sommet preferred a long shot beyond the arc after failing to deal with the Canons’ zone.
Even with Kasereka Tembo’s two long shots in the second quarter, Sommet trailed by six points going into the halftime break.
Mark Ngobi’s layup made with 01:20 minutes to play tied the game 44-44. Sommet concluded the third quarter with a 1-point lead.
Tembo’s hot hand kept in play as his jumpshot beyond the arc tied the game 53-53 with 07:16 minutes to play.
However, the Canons kept composed and handled the ball well thus securing a 10-point victory in front of a handful of fans.
Muganzi Daniel (18 points), Flore Dushime (15 points) and Alier Pech (12 points) led the Canons’ scoring chart in double digits.
On the other hand, Mark Ngobi (17 points), Peter Cheng (14 points) and Tembo (12 points) responded in double digits.
