Maroons FC overcame UPDF FC 2-1 in the armed forces derby placed on Wednesday at the Bombo Barrack Miltary Playground. This was their first win of the season, having fallen 1-0 to BUL FC in their campaign opener.
Dickson Niwamanya and Ivan Mayanja fired the Prison Warders into the lead before Faridi Rashid got the consolation for the Army Side.
The game marked the resumption of the Uganda Premier League and the start of matchday three after nearly a two-week hiatus due to the FIFA international break.
UPDF were the first to come out of the blocks with Samuel Kayongo Ssekamatte testing goalkeeper Hassan Matovu as early as the fifth minute while Andrew Samson Kigozi fluffled a chance wide when Faridi laid him through.
It was instead Maroons that took the lead in the 14th minute with gangly forward Niwamanya heading home from Emmanuel Obua’s corner kick delivery.
In the 25th minute, the visitors doubled their lead through Mayanja who was at the end of Rogers Kiwanuka’s cross and fired the ball into the roof of the net.
Five minutes into the second half, UPDF made changes introducing Daniel Kitara and Emmanuel Ochen in places of Galye Kalule and Andrew Samson Kigozi.
The hosts pulled one back in the 53rd minute when Joseph Jjanjali rounded off goalkeeper Matovu to set up Faridi.
Despite efforts by UPDF FC to salvage at least a point, Maroons held on to claim all three points.
Victory takes Maroons to eigth place on three points while UPDF are just a slot blow on the same number of points from three games.
