The CAVB Zone V Volleyball has different countries as Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

It was a successful opening day for the 2025 CAVB Zone V Beach Volleyball Championship at the Eden Garden Resort in Bujumbura, Burundi.

It was a tale of mixed fortunes as Team Uganda got varying results on the day; victory for the women’s team and a defeat for the men’s side.

Nancy Chebet & Peace Busingye combined forces to beat the Kenyan opposition of Esther Mwise & Ann Ekuam Akiru in straight sets.

Chebet and Busingye bossed the game, winning the match 2-0 (21-13, 21-06).

“We are so happy for the win against Kenya. The emphasis was to have a great service and a powerful one; it worked well. We look towards the rest of the matches in the competition,” Busingye, Uganda’s team captain, remarked in a post-match interview.

Meanwhile, Mwise and Akiru also fell in their second game 2-0 to Emmanuelie Ndyaikengurukiye & Pamella Irakoze (21-04, 21-01).

Other Women’s Results

Emelyne Igiraneza & Nadia Buntubwimana overcame Albert Evalyne & Mariam Omary 2-0 (21-17, 21-15) whilst Gynette Kamwemwe & Blonia Myandagaro also won 2-1 over Albert Evalyne & Mariam Omary (17-21, 21-11, 15-13).

Men:                                                      

The Ugandan male pairing of Isaac Ogusul & Innocent Ayo lost 2-0 to Burundi’s Florian Manariyo & Don Carmel Gakiza (17-21, 19-21).

The other Burundian pairing of Jean Luc Tuyaga & Christ Ornel Mukunzi smiled 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) past Kenya’s Betwel Kiplagat & Emmanuel Kipkirui.

The Kenyan duo of Elphas Kirwa & Reagan Kipchirchir fell 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 10-15) to Tanzania’s Saidi Alhaji & Selemani Hassani.

Don Diamel Ndayisaba & Engambe Igirineza (Burundi) won 2-1 against Sudan’s Ibrahim Hassan Omer & Naser Mohammed (12-21, 21-18, 15-13).

“The ladies’ team won after a good display. We fought for each and every point based on what we had discussed and planned earlier. We look forward the next ladies’ match against team Burundi three. We are playing round robin and we need to win the game in our midst,” Edward Bwengye, Uganda’s head coach, remained.
