The 2025 Buganda Masaza Football Championship officially climaxed on Saturday, 1st November at Hamz Stadium (Nakivubo War Memorial Grounds) in Kampala.

Buweekula won their first-ever title after years of agony since 2004, when the championship returned.

Alex Taremwa’s goal on the opening quarter hour mark was the all decisive strike that enabled the Mubende district-based entity to emerge top before thousands of spectators, with Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, also in attendance.

The strike arrived against the run of play following an impressive start from Ssingo, previous winners in 2015 and 2018.

Ssingo had started brilliantly when tricky dancing winger Edrine Junior Owachgui enjoyed a couple of lively moments on the left flank.

Buweekula goalkeeper Bashir Ssenyonga collected with ease a shot from Shaban Kayongo moments later, before Colline Ssemanda executed a free kick that was well picked up by Ssingo goalkeeper Joel Byamukama.

The goal came on 16 minutes, thanks to Taremwa’s distant shot that eluded goalkeeper Byamukama.

Ssingo staged a fight when Ismail Rwamitala missed a free header off Derrick Kato’s inviting corner kick in the 24th minute.

Mike Kayongo shot off-target for Buweekula from 25 yards before Ssingo’s Jackson Ssembatya headed out off another Kato corner kick.

Buweekula looked on in disbelief when Taremwa hit the crossbar from 22 yards in the 51st minute.

Three minutes after the hour mark, Ssingo midfielder Francis Ogwang got booked by referee Stephen Kimayo following a foul of Buweekula forward Shafiq Ssonko.

Two minutes later, Ssemanda’s well-curved free-kick missed the target for Buweekula.

Buweekula had Mike Kayongo cautioned for fouling Rwamitala in the middle of the pack with 20 minutes to play.

They held on gallantly to protect the lead and win the game 1-0, which earned them their first-ever trophy in the history of the Buganda Masaza championship.

With five titles to their name, Gomba has won the most championships in this tournament.
