It has been a season of mixed fortunes for the Mbale Wolves.
The men’s side got relegated from the 15s and 7s, then pulled out of the Uganda Cup, while the She Wolves narrowly survived relegation in the 15s, but finished bottom of the women’s log in the 7s, leaving their future in the short-code format of rugby in limbo.
On the opening weekend of the Uganda Cup, the She Wolves lost 15-13 to the Ewes, which put them in the uncomfortable position of having to win the rest of their group games.
As the Elgon Wolves were pulling out of the Uganda Cup, the She Wolves were determined to carry on the proud legacy of the Bamasaba in the competition.
The unsuspecting Kigezi Queens visited the Busamaga grounds in Mbale for the first time in their history, but the hosts were not so welcoming, whipping them 100-00.
The She Wolves opened their tab in the very first minute of the game through a Mary Daria try, and that opened the floodgates for the tries to flow in.
In her player of the match performance, Gladys Wilembe touched down 8 times, with 5 tries in the first half and a hat-trick in the second. This made her the player with the most tries on a single day, and also elevated her to top points and try scorer, with 40 points, ahead of teammate Habiba Namalembe. The latter had 3 tries on the day, adding to her two tries and a penalty she scored on the opening weekend of the Uganda Cup.
Namalembe now goes slightly ahead of Avengers’ Florence Babirye, whose team was out of action on compassionate grounds.
