Victoria University won the University 7s championship for the third consecutive year, marking a historic feat.
Since the revival of the tournament in 2023, Victoria University has dominated the other competing institutions of higher learning, completing their 3-Peat in 2025.
Along this 3-year journey, they have only failed to win one circuit, which was held at Kyambogo University in 2024, and claimed by the Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) of Nkozi.
This year, Victoria University was once again only challenged by UMU, whom they met and defeated in all three circuits, including the final circuit 31-10 win for Victoria University.
What made Victoria University tick
From the start of their sports program, VU was intentional about developing and investing in rugby.
The University established a 7s side by awarding some of the best young talents with scholarships to study and play.
One of the beneficiaries of this program is Daniel Kateregga, who graduated at the most recent ceremony. Kateregga joined as a university player, but kept his club allegiance with Buffaloes RFC for the National 7s and 15s competition, until he made the full move in 2024.
The move to have some of the Victoria University players on scholarships also play for the university club side, the Victoria Sharks, has paid off. The Victoria Sharks have subsequently earned promotion to the 15s league and stayed in the Top 8, while the 7s side has also earned promotion to next year’s National 7s.
The VU players who have not signed for the club side include Calvin Gizamba, Stuart Mwayi and Humphrey Ndahura. Such players bring a wealth of experience from their respective clubs, an advantage that came in handy when VU came up against universities without similar artillery.
University Rugby 7s return during the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) games to be held from December 14th to 19th at the Uganda Christian University in Mukono.
