At the start of every year, Uganda Golf Union (UGU) releases the calendar of activities, work-plans and competitions’ lay out.

The prestigious Uganda Open, for obvious reasons takes the lead among the eagerly awaited activities.

At the apex of the year, one signature event that every golfer keenly looks forward to is the Kinyara Golf Open in Masindi.

2025 Kinyara Sugar Golf Open launch

Now making 27 editions since inception, this championship has grown through leaps and bounds.

Like the normal has been over the years, the official launch was held at the Terraces of Uganda Golf Club (UGC) in Kampala with the major sponsors Kinyara Sugar Limited joined by several Insurance companies.

Liaison Group, ICEA Lion, UAP Old Mutual, Sanlam and MUA all presented different offers to spice up this championship that swings off on the 13th and will climax on 15th November 2025 at Masindi Golf Club.

Moses Enzama, the Kinyara Golf Club Captain communicated that over 100 golfers have already registered for this annual championship which has the gross players, professionals, seniors and other subsidiaries.

“More than 100 golfers from Uganda and across the region have registered to date for the 2025 and we expect over 200 golfers to take part.” remarked Enzama.

Owek. Francis Mugerwa, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) at Kinyara Sugar Limited outlined the categories to be played and what is at stake for the various top performers.

 “We are pleased to launch the 27th edition of the Kinyara Golf Open. This year the event will feature several categories, including the gross, professionals, subsidiaries, and seniors above 55 years, with prizes across each group. The gross category will tee off on the 13th and conclude on the 14th after three rounds (54 holes), while professionals will play two rounds (36 holes).” highlighted Mugerwa.

The gross players, professionals, seniors and the subsidiary golfers will all play for varying prizes at stake.

The professionals and gross category tee off on 13th for 36 holes and conclude on the 14th November, with 18 holes.

The gross category (Ladies) play 36 holes, that is; two rounds (36 holes). Round one on 13th and Round two on 14th November 2025.

Cash rewards:

The professionals’ total kitty is Ug.Shs 10,000,000 whilst the gross men will tussle for Ug.Shs 4,000,000 and the gross ladies take home Ug.Shs 3,000,000.

The gross players will also be vying for points on the World Amateur Golf Ranking System as the professionals haggle for the money at hand.

The main cluster of golfers will then get down to action on 15th November 2025 for 18 holes’ action.

Top performers in 2024:

Masindi bred golfer oseph Kasozi won the main gross event last year.

He faces stiff competition this year round from a crop of local talent as the reigning Uganda Amateur Open Champion Joseph Cwinya-ai, Reagan Joseph Akena, Andrew Ssekibejja, Peter Tumusiime, John Musiimenta, Peter Mayende, Ibrahim Bagalana and the ever green Michael Tumusiime, among others.

The professionals will play for a total kitty of Ug.Shs 10,000,000 to be shared by those who make the cut.

Grace Kasango won the professionals’ event last year. This year, he faces a line of hungry pros as the on-form David Kamulindwa, Vincent Byamukama, Marvin Kibirige, Irene Nakalembe, Herman Deco Mutebi, Rodel Tadeo Gaita, Abraham Ainamani, James Koto, Phillip Kasozi, Deo Akope, Herman Mutaawe,  the Bagalana brothers, Henry Lujja, Opio Onito, Samuel Kato, Emmanuel Ogwang; among others.

The senior golfers (those above 55 years) will also play in either gender alongside other groups of golfers.

There are prizes for the side-bet competitions as nearest to the pin and longest drive contests.

500Kg of sugar have been staked on the par-3 hole 7 for the hole-in-one shot.

The green fees are all fixed at Ug.Shs 50,000 per head.
