The medal tally for Uganda at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, reached six by Wednesday night.

Jesse Ssuubi Ssengonzi (OLY) finished third in the 100M butterfly race to take bronze.

Ssengonzi clocked 0:53:45 during the final won by Uzbekistan national Eldorbek Usmonov in 0:52:69, while Kazakhstani Adilbek Mussin took silver with 0:52:73.

By the 50m mark, Ssengonzi was at 0:24:72 and looked destined for glory as he touched the board.

“This is very exciting and humbling. I am happy for the medal and special appreciation for the team for the push, my coaches and everybody,” the US-based swimmer stated.

This was the sixth overall medal for Uganda at these games, which started in 2005, and the fourth in swimming, following two gold and a silver for Hungary-based swimmer Anna Gloria Muzito (OLY).

The female doubles Table Tennis team also won bronze on Wednesday evening.

The buoyant pair of Jemimah Nakawala and Judith Parvin Nangonzi, both students at Kibuli Secondary School, etched their names in Uganda’s history books as the first Table Tennis team ever to win a medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games.

Despite falling 1-3 to the Iranian duo of Shima Safaei and Neda Shahsavari, Uganda is assured of the bronze among the two third-placed teams.

Boxer Alfred Ojok, a fighter in the light-heavyweight category (80 Kg), also clinched a bronze medal.
