  • Morocco 4-0 Uganda

Uganda Cranes ended the November international break with a reality check in a 4-0 defeat to hosts Morocco at Stade Tangier.

An own goal from Herbert Achai set the ball rolling for the Atlas Lions before more goals from Ismael Saibari, Sofiane Rahimi, and Bilal El Khannous sealed a deserved win for the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists.

Paul Put made over six changes from the team that started against Chad last week with Denis Onyango, Allan Okello, Khalid Aucho, Steven Mukwala, Hilary Mukundane, and Kenneth Ssemakula all starting.

Without first choice left back Aziz Kayondo and Rogers Mato down the left, Achai faced Real Madrid and Manchester United’s Brahim Diaz and Nassour Mazraoui, and it showed with class as the Atlas Lions overloaded that side.

Even without injured Achraf Hakimi and Nayef Aguerd, Uganda were only allowed one shot on target – Okello’s curler in the first half.

However, Walid Regragui’s men were too good and dominated all statistics.

Morocco enjoyed 63 per cent of possession and attempted 23 shots with 11 on target as Onyango made over six saves to keep the score line a little respectable.

The introduction of new player Al Hassan Baba for Reagan Mpande at halftime improved the Cranes’ midfield. Still, the substitutions of Uche Ikpeazu, Travis Mutyaba, and Denis Kiggundu for Okello, Ssemakula, and Onyango didn’t make much of a difference.

With Elio Capradossi and Jude Ssemugabi also absent, Mukundane and Melvyn Lorenzen gave an account of themselves and will surely be on the plane to Morocco.

Uganda are in Group C with Tunisia, Tanzania and three-time champions Nigeria.
