Overview:

Comoros qualified for Afcon 2025 with an unbeaten record, and will look to repeat their group stage exit in their second major tournament, led by their star player Youssouf M'Changama.

Nickname: Les Coelacantes [The Coelacanths]

Fifa rank: 108

Afcon 2025 Group: A

Head coach: Stefano Cusin

Group stage fixtures: Morocco [Dec 21]; Zambia [Dec 26]; Mali [Dec 29]

Afcon appearances: 2 [2021, 2025]

Best Afcon Performance: Round of 16 [2021]

How they qualified: Comoros was in coincidentally in group A of the qualifiers with Tunisia, Gambia and Madagascar.

Against all odds, they finished the campaign on top with an unbeaten record [W3, D3] two ahead of the Carthage Eagles. They scored 7 goals and conceded 4 in six matches.

Realistic chances at Afcon 2025: They are huge under dogs in a brutal group that has hosts Morocco, perennial Afcon finalists Mali and 2012 winners Zambia.

They did so well to get here leading a group that had Tunisia but playing in the round 16 will be the target.

I don’t see them competing for the title but getting out of the group again will be a decent achievement.

They have been molded to be resilient, but also with added glimpses of flair, so expect them to string together some wonderful play. This is their second major tournament, having played in the 2021 Afcon, where they managed to get out of the group.

Who is the star of the team? Youssouf M’Changama is the most capped and will be eager to add on the tally.

He has already scored over 15 goals for the national team and this could surely be his last Afcon now that he is 35 years old.

He was the team’s top scorer with 2 goals in the qualification campaign.
