The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, has confirmed the Africa Cup of Nations will adopt a four-year cycle, starting in 2028.

Motsepe announced on Saturday during a press briefing at Complex Sportif Prince Moulay in Rabat.

“We have the most exciting new structure for African football,” Motsepe said. “I do what is in the interests of Africa. The global calendar has to be significantly more synchronised and harmonised.

“The Competition will take place every 4 years after 2028. To ensure this transition, a tighter schedule is planned: after the 2027 edition, an AFCON bridge will be organized from 2028, before switching to the quadrennial cycle,” he stated.

Therefore, after the 2027 AFCON in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, another edition will be staged in 2028 from which the four-year cycle will commence.

AFCON has taken place every two years since 1968, with a one-year gap between the 2012 and 2013 editions.
