David Isabirye moments after arrival at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca city, Morocco

Overview:

Hay el fath apartment in Rabat city will be the sweet home away from the sublime Entebbe Peninsular town for the next 30 days until January 19th 2026.

By the blessing of God, I am in Rabat city, Morocco. This makes a return to this tranquil city after previous service during the ISF Schools football World Cup in 2023.

This time round, I am back to cover the 35th edition of the TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on behalf of mother company, Kawowo Sports Media.

Literally, I have always passionately voluntarily made the endeavor to elucidate the meaning of “Kawowo” to hundreds who yearn to know the origin.

This is derived from the rich Luganda dialect “Akawoowo”, literally meaning something with a nice aroma and sweet scent.

Once again, Kawowo Sports Media has provided the full board sponsorship for my travel to Morocco, alongside several of my media colleagues from the same company.

Thanks to the tireless effort of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Joseph Owino and the rest of the backroom crew at the Kamwokya based entity.

This is the third AFCON championship that I am covering on behalf of Kawowo Sports Media after Gabon (2017) and Egypt (2019).

I left Entebbe on the morning of Friday, 19th December 2025 together with my Kawowo Sports Media comrades in diligent service Michael Muhiima, Fred Darius Sempuwo, Joshua Lubanga, Joel Muyita, Isma Kiyonga and John Phillip Mugabi.

It was a very rainy morning when I left from home enroute to the lake side Entebbe International Airport on the peninsular of arguably Africa’s largest fresh water body, Lake Victoria.

The flight from Entebbe International Airport was on flight MS 835 with EgyptAir for duration of five hours and 30 minutes.

There was a long 7-hour lay-off at Cairo International Airport, refreshing by the waiting lobby and a cup of coffee.

From Cairo, we embarked on the journey to Casablanca with flight MS 861 which was successful; checking in at around 1 AM (Saturday morning) at the Mohammed V International Airport amid very chilly and rainy conditions.

Using a train service, we then set off from Casablanca city Aeroport Med V to CASA Port (DV KR64KG) and another connecting train from CASA Port to Rabat Agdal (DV QCE2QG).

The train journey from Casablanca to Rabat was literally for two hours to the final destination, a lavish apartment (Hay el fath) in the heart of Rabat, a stone throw away from the magnificent Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah  stadium.

The next quest was to secure the official tournament accreditation badge that often precipitates the smooth work operations during international championship.

This was secured on time, like my workmates as we headed to the Stade Olympique Annex for the scheduled Uganda Cranes training session on Saturday evening.

Sadly, the planned training session did not take place despite the efforts of all the members of the technical team led by head coach Paul Joseph Put reporting to the training ground, assembling the training gear (cones, balls and others).

By press-time, Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) was yet to comment on the skipped training session whilst the Belgian national Put was also non committal on the saga although, he acknowledged it would “disturb” the team’s final preparations for the Tuesday opener against Tunisia.

Sunday is a moving day and we eagerly await the reaction from FUFA, technical docket and most importantly, the players.

Hosts Morocco take on Comoros in the official tournament opener on Sunday evening at the 69,500 seater Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium in Rabat.

Definitely, I will be among the thousands seated in the media tribune as early as 5 PM for the 8 PM kick-off local time (10 PM, East African Time).

Morocco, here I come, so help me God.
