Egypt secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Zimbabwe in the 2025 African Nations Cup (AFCON) encounter at the Stade Adrar in Agadir on Monday.
The Pharaohs rallied from a goal down to clinch a slim victory on a day Zimbabwe nearly shocked them.
Egypt came out of their blocks early, pressing Zimbabwe on the back foot in the opening 19 minutes of the game.
Mohamed Salah gave Zimbabwe’s backline a tough run with his continuous runs on the right flank and the teasing cross towards the back post.
Prince Dube smartly controlled Emmanuel Jalai’s ball into the area before slotting it into the back of the net in the 20th minute.
Omar Mamoush nearly found the leveller for the Pharaohs but his thunderbolt was finger-tipped away by Zimbabwe’s goalkeeper.
On the stroke of the opening stanza, Salah blasted the ball over the bar from the edge of the box.
Egypt’s continuous attacks paid off after Omar Mamoush levelled matters in the 64th minute of the game. His powerful effort went past the goalkeeper into the roof of the net.
Midway through the second stanza, Zizo squandered the game’s best chance after nodding it way above the frame.
However, Salah broke Zimbabwe’s hearts late in the game after his effort went through several legs into the back of the net.
