Uganda Christian University (UCU) clinched the men’s football gold medal following a tense penalty shootout in Mukono.

After a goalless stalemate in regulation time, the UCU Cardinals edged out Makerere University 2–1 on their home turf.

The hero of the day was Cardinals goalkeeper Elton Mwidhu, whose two crucial saves secured the victory for his side.

For the Cardinals, Sharif Ssewanyana and Najib Bananywa successfully found the net, while Ismail Ogwang was the sole scorer for Makerere during the shootout.

The path to victory wasn’t without its hurdles. Patrick Ogola and Reagan Ssekisambu failed to convert from the 12-yard mark for the Cardinals.

However, Makerere’s struggles were more pronounced, as Musa Male, Kevin Ssekimbega, and Emmanuel Ogwang all missed their spot-kicks.

Despite the heartbreak of the final, Makerere University can take pride in their performance. Returning to the tournament after a 12-year hiatus and reaching the final is a significant achievement for the side.

UCU’s journey to the podium was a testament to patience and belief.

Despite a slow start to the campaign, the Cardinals demonstrated the courage necessary to endure the pressure and ultimately walk away with the gold.
