Mozambique edge Gabon 3-2 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) encounter at Stade Adrar in Agdir on Sunday.
Guelor Kanga had a great chance to put Gabon in the lead under two minutes but his effort was palmed away in an emphatic manner.
Geny Catamo found himself in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper in the 17th minute but the custodian bravely showed up to make an astonishing save.
Final Bangal nodded Mozambique in the lead in the 37th minute. Bangal rose highest in the area to guide Geny Catano’s cross into the back of the net.
Two minutes later, defender Bruno Manga was penalised for pulling down Mehrez Melki in the area, and Mozambique were awarded a penalty.
Catano stepped up to the the area and fired the ball past goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba into the back of the net thus doubling Mozambique’s lead.
On the stroke of the first stanza, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled back one for Gabon with a tap-in from close range.
In the 52nd minute, Witi extended Mozambique’s lead with a close range strike that beat goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba to guide the ball into the bottom left corner.
Alex Moucketou-Moussounda was in the right place to pounced on a loose ball in the area before he riffled the ball into the middle of the net.
Gabon threw everything upfront seeking to pick a point from the end to end game but Mozambique’s backline was equal to the challenge.
