South Africa survived Zimbabwe’s scare in their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations group game at Stade de Marrakech on Monday.
Bafana Bafana fought tooth and nail to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory on the day when Zimbabwe put up an emphatic show.
South Africa broke the deadlock in the seventh minute as Tshepang Moremi’s deflected effort found the back of the net after being set up by Lyle Foster.
Tawanda Maswanhise levelled matters with a spectacular individual effort in the 19th minute. The quick-footed forward danced past his marker before firing past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Five minutes into the second half, Foster regained South Africa’s lead after Zimbabwe’s defensive error.
In the 73rd minute, Aubrey Modiba guided the ball into his net as Zimbabwe levelled matters.
The ball bounced off a Zimbabwean in the dangerous area but the referee waved play on. Later on, VAR intervened, thus awarding Bafana Bafana a penalty in the 81st minute.
Oswin Appollis stepped up to the occasion and fired past Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi in the 82nd minute.
South Africa qualified from the group as the second-placed team with six points in three games.
In the other game, Angola held Egypt in a goalless draw to finish third with only two points.
