Overview:
The GolfSixes League Uganda is supported by a consortium of leading global golf organizations – including The R&A, the DP World Tour, Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG) and the Ladies European Tour – the League has been embraced across continents.
The GolfSixes League, a global junior golf development programme, has cemented its reputation as one of the most effective international initiatives for introducing young people to the sport.
The latest milestone saw the Uganda Golf Union (UGU), in partnership with The R&A and AFRIYEA Golf Academy, host a highly successful GolfSixes League event at Toro Golf Club in Fort Portal, Western Uganda.

The competition drew rising junior talent from across the country, including clubs such as Mbarara Sports Club, Kilembe Mines Golf Club, Masindi Golf and Sports Club, and the host venue.
An impressive 89 juniors competed in the grand finale of Uganda’s GolfSixes League tournament, reflecting the rapidly growing participation and enthusiasm for the sport among young golfers.

A global format designed for growth:
Originally launched in the United Kingdom in 2017, the GolfSixes League has evolved from a short team match-play concept into an international development programme aimed at making golf more accessible and enjoyable for beginners and young players worldwide.
The format is inherently inclusive, encouraging teamwork and participation through a fun, Texas Scramble-style competition where teams of six players compete over six holes.
Supported by a consortium of leading global golf organizations – including The R&A, the DP World Tour, Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG) and the Ladies European Tour – the League has been embraced across continents.

Its expansion is backed by the Golf Foundation, a charity that has helped grow the initiative in the UK and beyond.
As of the most recent reports, the GolfSixes League is now offered in more than 20 countries, spanning Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Oceania, with continued plans for further global roll-out.
Expanding impact in Uganda and East Africa:
The inclusion of Uganda in the League marks a significant milestone for golf development in East Africa.
Uganda becomes the second African nation to host the GolfSixes League after South Africa’s successful participation in 2024, highlighting the sport’s growing appeal across the continent.

For a nation with one of the youngest populations in the world, the GolfSixes League offers a fertile platform to engage young players and foster a sustainable golfing culture.
The programme aims not only to give children their first competitive golf experience but also to create clear pathways from grassroots involvement to higher levels of play, including potential national representation.
The GolfSixes League represents a significant step forward in our commitment to growing the game at grassroots level. By introducing young people to golf through a simple, enjoyable and inclusive format, we are creating strong foundations for the future of the sport in Uganda. This initiative not only broadens access but also helps to identify and nurture talent, while instilling the values of discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship. It also forms a key part of our national golf development agenda.
Dr Jackson Were, President, Uganda Golf Union

Our focus is on creating simple, enjoyable and truly inclusive pathways into golf, particularly for young people who are new to the game. The GolfSixes League does exactly that by removing traditional barriers to entry and allowing beginners to experience golf in a fun, supportive and team-based environment. By prioritizing enjoyment, teamwork and accessibility, the programme builds confidence, encourages long-term participation and helps young players develop a genuine love for the sport. This is how sustainable golf development begins and how we secure the future of the game.

Building on Global Success
Internationally, the GolfSixes League has a strong track record of expanding junior participation and fostering diversity within the sport.

In the UK and Ireland alone, tens of thousands of young players participate each year across hundreds of clubs, with notable increases in junior membership linked directly to GolfSixes League activity.
Many clubs report that participants express strong interest in continuing with golf beyond the League, underscoring the initiative’s success in retaining young players.

The accessible, team-based format continues to break down traditional barriers to golf, creating a positive entry point for families and communities that might otherwise be unfamiliar with the sport.
With continued global expansion and involvement in international events including indoor GolfSixes competitions the League is poised to remain a cornerstone of junior golf development for years to come.
