Record champions Egypt face Benin in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations on Monday at the Grande Stade d’Agadir with a quarter final berth the reward.

The Pharaohs topped Group A with seven points following victories over Zimbabwe and South Africa and a draw with Angola in a game they rested their star players.

For Benin, they qualified to the stage as one of the four third best placed nations with three points attained in the 1-0 victory over Botswana despite defeats to DR Congo (1-0) and Senegal.

Hossam Hassan is aware of the threat Benin can pose and wants his team to do well.

“Our goal is to get past Benin, a team we respect and appreciate,” Hassan told a pre-match news conference on Sunday.

“Their qualification for the round of 16 was certainly not a coincidence.”

His opposite number Gernot Rohr expects an extremely difficult game against the record champions.

“We expect an extremely difficult match against a very high-level opponent,” Rohr said.

“We have gained experience against big teams and I hope it will benefit us. We are not the favorites, but that does not stop us from fighting for our chance.” he concluded.
