The Super Eagles of Nigeria showed class, pedigree and determination during their 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Algeria in the AFCON 2025 at Stade De Marrakech on Saturday evening.

Two second half goals from team captain Victor James Oshimen and Adams Akor led Eric Chelle’s coached side to victory.

The Nigerians were aggressive, dominant and direct in the approach right from the opening phase of the game where they also had a debatable moment and case for a ball from Ademola Lookman that seemingly crossed the line (according to TV replays).

Oshimen headed the Super Eagles ahead with a powerfully drilled header in the 4th minute past goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

Eight minutes later, Akor dribbled past Zidane to tap into an empty net for the second goal following link up play from Alex Iwobi and Oshimen who squared the ball to Akor’s path.

The would be third goal and killer from Nigeria by Akor head the right post after Oshimen’s deft chip on the by-line in the 73rd minute.

The game was very physical, highly tactical and tense with tensions rising from either side.

Nigerian winger Wilfred Ndidi and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was cautioned for delay to restart play in the 85th minute and Simon Moses got booked deep in added time for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Algeria had five players booked; midfielder Ramiz Zerrouki and forward Mohamed Amoura in the first half as well as substitutes Rayan Ait Nouri, Hadji Moussa and Hicham Boudoui in the subsequent stanza.

In total, the Senegalese referee Issa Sy issued out eight yellow cards during the game.
