Nigeria Super Eagles have finished third to earn bronze at the 2025 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This followed a 4-2 post-match penalty victory over Egypt at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca city on Saturday, 17th January 2026.

After 90 minutes of thrilling football from the two sides, there was no score per either side and the game was decided by penalties (with no extra time).

Jerome Adams Akor, captain Moses Daddy Simon, Alexander Chuka Iwobi and Lookman Olajide Ademola scored for the Super Eagles.

Faruq Bashiru Dele missed his kick after being foiled by goalkeeper Mostafa Ahmed Abdelaziz Mohamed Shoubir.

Aerial battle between Egypt and Nigeria

Ramy Hisham Abdelaziz Moustafa Rabia and Mahmoud Saber Hassan Abdelmohsen scored Egypt’s two penalties in the tense shoot-out.

Skipper Mohamed Salah and Omar Khaled Mohamed Marmoush missed for Egypt after they were stopped by goalkeeper Stanley Bobo Nwabali.

Nwabali was deserved named as the man of the match for the heroics.

Normal time witnessed an end-to-end action story with Nigeria managing to find the back of the net twice through Akor Adams and Lookman Ademola but on both occasions, the Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed cancelled the efforts.

Salah and Nantes forward Mostafa Mohamed Ahmed Abdalla got close for Egypt but were denied by Chippa United goalkeeper Nwabali.

Focus will turn to the final between hosts Morocco and Senegal on Sunday night at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat city.
