Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. A quote clearly summarises Joel Kayiira’s situation as he bids farewell to UCU Canons.
After three transformative seasons at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Kayira has officially bid an emotional farewell to UCU Canons.
Kayira described the decision to leave as difficult, calling the Mukono-based side his home and family.
“Once a Canon, always a Canon. I am still UCU but just in a different jersey,” the Centre noted.
“Leaving was hard because UCU is home and family. I am grateful to the coaches, teammates and fans who have supported me from day one. I will miss all of them,” he added.
Looking at where the story started from and how much he has achieved, Kayira points it to belief and patience as a foundation of his growth.
“My story should show every young athlete out there that it is possible. I started late and in a short time but with faith, hard work and discipline, things can change.”
Kayira is set to join the City Oilers for the 2026 National Basketball League season, becoming the latest in a long line of players to move from UCU Canons to the record-holding champions.
