The eyes of the continent are fixed on Kigali as the 47th edition of the 47th CAVB Men’s Club Championship officially launched this Tuesday.

In a lively media briefing at the BK Arena, officials confirmed that 24 powerhouse clubs from 14 African nations are ready to battle for volleyball supremacy over the next 10 days.

The championship marks a significant shift in the sport’s continental landscape.

Traditionally dominated by North African powerhouses, the arrival of this prestigious tournament in Rwanda signals the rising profile of volleyball in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Raphael Ngarambe, President of the Rwanda Volleyball Federation, assured fans and participants that the host nation is prepared to deliver an elite experience.

“As a federation, we have worked closely with our partners, including CAVB and the government of Rwanda, to ensure that this championship meets the highest standard on and off the court,” Ngarambe remarked.

“We are committed to delivering a world-class experience for the players, officials, fans, and the media.”

CAVB Vice President Louis Rwakiranya expressed deep gratitude to the Rwandan government for its vision in hosting a tournament of this magnitude.

“It is a big emotion to see volleyball hosted in Rwanda, a country of unity, vision, and leadership,” Rwakiranya said.

“We are following our strategic plan to show how high-level volleyball is played in African countries. Before, it was mainly in the North, but now it is coming down to our countries.”

Sanga Issouf Kone, Chairman of the Control Committee, revealed that the 24 participating clubs hail from 14 diverse nations, including Egypt, Morocco, Cameroon, Kenya, and Côte d’Ivoire, among others.

Beyond the immediate thrill of competition, the Rwandan Ministry of Sports views the event as a catalyst for long-term development.

Gilbert Muvunyi, Director General of Development in the Ministry, highlighted the tournament’s role in motivating the next generation of athletes.

“Volleyball remains a very promising sport for our country, particularly from the grassroots level,” Muvunyi noted. “This event is an opportunity to inspire our youth, who will be watching and aspiring to be part of this journey in the future.”

Action officially begins on Wednesday, with matches scheduled to take place at both the iconic BK Arena and Petit Stade.

As technical meetings conclude and the groups are drawn, the stage is set for a historic celebration of African sportsmanship and skill.
