Victoria Pearls all-rounder Malisa Ariokot led from the front with a well-constructed half-century of 96 off 52 balls as the defending champions Olila High School got off the mark against debutants St Cornelius.
St Cornelius might have failed to tame Malisa, but they showed some good cricket skills, especially with their catching.
The defending champions are in a commanding position in Group A, with Masindi SS the only other team that will offer them a challenge.
St John’s Mukono was bailed out by the bat of Irene Mutonyi (49), who missed a half-century after being in a sticky situation against Gulu High School. The gift of 42 extras helped them reach the three-digit mark.
Nampeera Sonia (5/4) never gave Gulu High a chance in the run chase as St John’s survived a scare.
Meanwhile, Sheila Namagoba (64) and Asha Mukite (58) struck half-centuries that helped record winners Jinja SSS pick up a big win in the Jinja Derby against Good Heart SS. Jinja SSS took the top position in Group C, which has Sacred Heart and Ndejje SSS as formidable competition for a top 8 position.
Gayaza High School failed to get past Mt St Henry’s Mukono in a very one-sided encounter. Gayaza was bundled out cheaply and were fortunate that Mt St Henry’s gifted them 18 extras, otherwise it could have been worse. A loss that puts the chances of the four-time winners on a knife-edge in Group B, and they are yet to play Light SS and Soroti SS, the other strong teams in the group.
St Theresa, on their debut, had no respect for Ndejje SS, handing them an 8-wicket loss. The debutants didn’t show any fear competing against an experienced opponent. St Theresa bowled with discipline to make sure Ndejje never went out of their snare; the small total never troubled the debutants in the run chase.
The action continues today at six different grounds in Gulu City.
