Girls Cricket Week defending Champions, Olila High School, were tested by Mt St Henry’s High School in their first Super 8 match, but they found a way past the Mukono-based school.

Olila High was chased down a low total, but they had to dig deep to find the four-wicket win, which keeps them unbeaten thus far.

The highlight match of the Super 8 was the clash between record winners Jinja SS and St John’s SS Mukono. Jinja SS batted first, and a great bowling display from St John’s restricted them to a modest 71, with Victoria Pearls fast bowler Irene Mutonyi putting in a great 3/6 spell in her quota of four overs.

St John’s started so slowly in the run chase, and that was their undoing. With the required rate creeping up, the wickets started to fall, and in the end, they ran out of resources with runs still required for the win.

It was a terrible start for St John’s SS in their push for a semifinal place, and the win kept the unbeaten record of Jinja SS intact.

In the placement games, Ndejje SS pushed Soroti SS to the end, but the Eastern girls held their nerve to win by just one wicket. Ndejje’s captain, Blessing Apio, had an outstanding bowling performance; she picked up four wickets without conceding a run in her quota of four overs. She was unfortunate to be on the losing end, but a performance that will give Ndejje SS more confidence in their next games.

The week-long tournament hosted by Gulu City will conclude on Saturday, with the top 2 sides in the two Super 8 groups qualifying for the semifinals and then finals.
